Nash's two goals lift Rangers to a win in season opener

When the league scheduled the start of the new season for the defending Eastern Conference Champion New York Rangers the first tough opponents for the team was flying to St. Louis, Missouri and taking on the Blues, but there were some tough questions to be answered on the Rangers side of things and that player was Rick Nash.

But he answered some questions of his own by having a fantastic game scoring two goals and assisting one to give the Rangers a big 3-2 win for the first time in over eight seasons. Especially scoring the game winner with 1:50 left in the third period as the Blues tried to clear their zone and the puck deflects off the glass and stayed in, but quick thinking by Martin St. Louis as he recovered the puck and quickly found a wide open Nash who wristed it past Brian Elliott.

His first of the season came in the first period as Chris Kreider stole the puck from Kevin Shattenkirk at the far boards and took a right handed swing to an open area in the middle of the of the zone and Nash snapped a wrister for the first goal of the game. While he got help from Kreider on the opening goal he returned the favor after the Blues tied it up at the start of the third.

Chris Kreider gave the Rangers the lead back at 6:30 of the third period after a solid defensive play by Marc Staal allowed the Rangers to move the puck up the ice and quickly Nash made a great tape to tape pass to Kreider who was already streaking on a breakaway and beats Elliott to his blocker side.

Henrik Lundqvist had several great saves in this game as he made 23 saves out of 25 shots and was strong for forty plus minutes before the Blues converted early in the 3rd period, but to be honest Lundqvist is in mid-season form as the start of the season began in St. Louis. As of right now the Rangers start the season 1-0 and are tied on points with the Devils and Penguins in the Metropolitan division, but once again it’s the start of the 2014-15 season and the Rangers are making a trip to Columbus, Ohio and face the Blue Jackets who will open their home schedule on Saturday.
