It took fiftteen long days of interviews and discussions between New York Jets owner Robert “Woody” Johnson & his consultant’s in former GM’s Charlie Casselrey & Ron Wolf, but the decision has been made as former Houston Texans head of College Scouting Mike MacCagnan & former Arizona Cardinals defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles have been hired in their respective positions as General Manager and Head Coach.
Mike MacCagnan started out with the former London Monarchs of the World League of American Football as a scout and then made several stints in the Canadian Football League as well as a 20 year history inside the NFL as he was once the right hand man of Charlie Casselrey as the GM of the Washington Redskins & Texans, who helped out Johnson with the interviewing process.
To be honest there were rumors circling around that Casselrey were interested in trying a NFL GM job one more time, but it looks like that he is missing his TV Time for the NFL Network. But while MacCagnan is known for checking out prospects in these senior bowl types of games as a scout, we will find out if he is suited for the big office as a General Manager.
As for Todd Bowles his hire is very simple, Dan Quinn is still a part of the Seattle Seahawks coaching staff and has a NFC title game to play against the Green Bay Packers, as the Jets didn’t want to wait and see if Quinn would be available if the Seahawks would head back to the Super Bowl or not. But once again the Jets hired a new head coach who is a master tactician on the defensive side of the ball with the Arizona Cardinals.
Unlike Dominic Rodgers-Cromartie who left the Jets training facility after his interview and signed with the Giants, the Jets gave Bowles his second interview and kept him to sign his contract. A man who played eight seasons in the NFL as a defensive back for the Washington Redskins & San Francisco 49ers will lead Gang Green into the future. He was the interim head coach for the Miami Dolphins back in 2011 after Tony Sparano was fired and has a 2-1 record.
Listening to all the talk shows on radio and NFL Network suggested that Bowles is the next coordinator to make the move into a head coaching position and right now it sounds like MacCagnan & Woody Johnson have found their man very quickly to make this happen. But once again we won’t know anything about these people until we get to the NFL Draft in the end of April, resigning key free agents and free agents who want to come here.
We will need to see what Bowles can really do as the top man of the Jets once we get to training camp, exhibition games and when the regular season starts in September the weekend after Labor Day. At the moment it’s a solid start to this new tandem and hopefully they will get the chance to change things around.
