It was a great scene at Met Life Stadium seeing all the Jets fans filling up the place and excited for the new season with a brand new coaching staff and seeing new & old faces coming to the Jets and starting off the season at home against the Cleveland Browns.
It was a slow start to the game on both sides of the ball for the Jets but after a 54yd throw from Johnny Manziel that landed in the hands of Travis Benjamin, Todd Bowles side finally found their rhythm as Ryan Fitzpatrick commanded the pocket and was able to throw two touchdowns to Eric Decker for 15 yards and Brandon Marshall on a fade towards the far side of the end zone for a yard.
But the best moments of the game by the Jets came on Defense along with a fantastic play by Brandon Marshall that kept hope of tying the score. First Marshall’s spectacular play as the Jets are driving down the field trailing by a touchdown. After converting on a 43yd catch and run by Chris Owusu, Fitzpatrick threw the ball towards Marshall but didn’t see Tashaun Gipson as it was intercepted.
But Marshall with some quick thinking tried to stop Gipson from making a big play found a way to strip the ball out of Gipson’s hands as he was tackling him down and Marshall ran it to the Cleveland 9yd line for a new set of downs. Gipson thought he was already down when the ball was stripped, but on replay Marshall stripped him clean and the Jets fans started to chant Marshall’s name.
On Defense the Jets found ways to stop Starting Quarterback Josh McCown and Manziel by knocking the ball out of their hands or forcing a fumble and recovering it. 1st Possession of the game McCown on the Jets 14yd line tried to take it himself and dive into the end zone, but before he got to the goal line, he was hit in mid-air by Calvin Pryor and lost the ball on the Jets 1yd line. The ball bounced inside the end zone and was recovered by Antonio Cromartie In the 3rd Quarter Marcus Williams picked off a pass for former Dolphins Wide Receiver Brian Hartline and returned it for 18yds, Then Manziel was sacked and got stripped as Darrell Revis recovered the ball, then Trevor Riley sacked Manziel as he forced a fumble that was recovered by Quinton Coples.
21 Points came from the five turnovers the Jets forced on the Browns and they come out with the first win of the Todd Bowles era. The Jets looking like a team that is playing hard and fast on both sides of the ball & so far Fitzpatrick looks solid after the first game of the season. The offensive line made sure they kept him upright and never got touched to get sacked, also Brandon Marshall is already a folk hero as Jets fans chanted his name making spectacular catches as he caught the ball six times for 62 yds.
But with a great win comes a price as Antonio Cromartie might have a serious left knee injury as he was helped off the field and holding it, also 3rd round rookie Lorenzo Mauldin left the game with a concussion after making a sack on Manziel in the 3rd Quarter. But as we said during the offseason that Mike MacCagnan’s job was a success and now we needed to see what Bowles can do, so far it’s been a good start and lets head to Week 2 at Indianapolis
